Sure, Ilocos Sur Escape: Vigan City and Bantay

Philippines was once colonized by the Spaniards years ago. That's why some of the traditions and customs are basicaly mirrored by them. Most especially in the northern part of the country, some of the words in their native dialect used by the group of people called Ilocanos are similar to Spanish. Their great influence can also be seen on the different architectural works throughout the country. Vigan City, is one of the most prominent city to consider.

Recognized by UNESCO World Herritage  Site as one of the New7Wonders Cities of the world, Vigan City is popular for its
well-preserved spanish architectural houses that is main located in Calle Crisologo at the heart of the city.

Personally, I can't remember the last time I visited the City. My province is just next to it and I am pretty sure I've been here when I was in grade school. It was years back then. I can't even recall how do it look.

As if I rode a time machine and went back to the Spanish Era where all things were in their simpliest form.

Structures are still remained intact and  the city is also known for its cobblestone streets. Superb! 😊

Famous old houses are most likely to be seen at Calle Crisologo. A steps away from the city proper.

Spanish time experience at Calle Crisologo is at its best while riding a calesa. If you want to buy some souvenirs, many shops are selling different Vigan's best items and are available around the street.

Many Calesas are offering a tour that is paid per hour. They will help you find the best tourist destinations of the city.

There are also some parts of Calle Crisologo that are worth it to be a background for DPs and delight.

Try to eat their dirty ice cream while having a walk at Calle Crisologo. It'll help you ease the heat! Haha!

Via Calesa, you can visit the Bantay Bell Tower.

The Saint Agustine Parish Church was commonly  known as Bantay Church, located in Bantay, Ilocos Sur (nearby town of Vigan City).

The old historic belfry of the church known as the Bantay Tower served as a watchtower for pirates back in the Spanish colonial era.

You can also visit the old provincial jail of Ilocos Sur that serves now as an art gallery. It is the birthplace of the 6th president of Philippines, late Pres. Elpidio Quirino.

The provincial jail is now relocated to the neighboring town of Vigan City- Bantay.

Things that the late president used before are showcased and many paintings of different artists are displayed.

Just inside the city proper of Vigan, you'll see the Plaza Salcedo.

Located just infront of the St. Paul's Cathedral, the place was named to honor  Spanish conquistador- Juan de Salcedo.

The place is the site of the execution of Gabriela Silang. She is the first female leader of the Philippine revolution who was publicly hanged to serve as a warning to the restive populace.

It offers different attractions such as the Rizal Monument and the Dancing Fountain to name a few.

There are still many attractions that you can visit in Ilocos Sur like the Baluarte, The Hidden Garden and many more. We lack time because we need to go northern for our next trip.

Wait for my next blog because I went to Ilocos Norte! Can't wait to share to you guys!
